School on a hill...

Had a chance to chat recently with Board of Education Architect Paul McDonnell and City Honors Principal Bill Kresse about the plans to rehab and add a few major structures to the City Honors campus.
City Honors
City Honors is both a local landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places, retired City Honors English teacher Chuck LaChiusa has documented the history - right here. Originally known as Fosdick Masten, this city high school also has a well loved local history museum - Hilltop Museum.

One of the schools most famous graduates and best known intellectuals from Buffalo's East side, Richard Hofstadter (1916 - 1970), graduated from the then Fosdick Masten High School in 1933. Of course Harry Emerson Fosdick, son of Principal Frank Fosdick, went on to become the first minister at Riverside Church in New York.

Stay tuned, I'll be following construction developments here at City Honors as the school frames part of this East side neighborhood, a very short 10 blocks from Performing Arts HS, just down Masten Avenue.

Help us out. What are we looking at in this site plan? It's small and some of us aren't engineers or architects.

I wish they were doing more with that parking lot. There are many opportunities for trees not being taken advantage of

the left hand side of the sketch is Best Street and the two gray buildings are the proposed new spots. This is the "front lawn" of City Honors...

the campus stretches to michigan ave? I find it hard to believe.

Looks like they are removing Fosdick St and knocking down the projects between there and Michigan for the athletic field shown above.

a view from 1927 showing the school grounds:

Fosdick St was not there yet. The school grounds went to the houses facing Michigan Ave.

it looks like most of the houses directly opposite on best st. are boarded up. is something more than abandonment going on.

Isn't that where the athletic field was originally located (note current remains of the original grandstands)?

This is an awesome building and what I really like are the plans to rebuild the original clock tower that was removed in the late 1920’s for reasons unknown; perhaps structural problems? Since the building had been erected in 1912 I am curious as to why the tower was actually removed…moot point.

The really good news is that those awful housing units will be removed from the perimeter of the building though I am sad to see that other buildings are now going to be erected on the campus.
