Artspace(d)?

The image “http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y192/fixbuffalo/snip2.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Just chatting with a local artist who was all set to move into Artspace over the weekend. She was told by Brian Day - Belmont Shelter Rental agent - that the building didn't receive the necessary certificate of occupancy from the City of Buffalo, despite the fact that her rental agreement says she could move in on Saturday, July 14th.
According to her..
...he [Brian Day] kept telling us there was no way we wouldn't be able to move in this weekend that it was a sure bet...then he tells us a day before we were supposed to move in that we couldn't and moved the date back to this coming saturday...
She's rather pissed. The woman she is sharing the space with had to pay for a moving company, that didn't move her. And then there's an issue with floors, that don't seem to up to spec. Something with the a huge concrete patch slapped into the middle of a wooden floor.

A Certificate of Occupancy is required before people move in. Wonder what Artspace, Savarino and Belmont Shelter were ever thinking...
Yikes...anyone else out there with a similar experience?

Do tell...

Artspace Projects would like to sincerely apologize for this delay. We have been working very hard to see this project along, and are so sorry that the move-in date has had to be postponed. Please know that we are working with all tenants scheduled to have moved in to accommodate their needs. We are thankful for the opportunity to serve the community of Buffalo by providing this buidling of affordable live/work space.

Just heard from someone in the know...

"Seems the schedule is a Savarino thing. They give Belmont the ready dates. Belmont isn't involved in the construction schedule from what I know. Can't say I'm surprised though."

And you are?

Same thing happened with the Oak Street lofts... we were ready to move our friends in, only to hear that the permits weren't approved. Waited 10 extra days with little compensation for the inconvenience. Not to mention that I received no compensation for having a friend and his girl sleep on my couch for a week.

This type of thing happens all the time with construction. It is not a 'Buffalo' thing, but a 'construction' thing.

AS has a track record.

Don't believe the GC who did the Oak Street Lofts had such a thing.

Was expecting more from the people at Savarino, that's all.

Construction and permit delays are common. If they are guilty of anything it is with their move in schedule period being too aggressive.

Seems like you are making a scandal where none exists.

Steel is correct. Move in schedules are estimates at best. They shouldn't have promised it as much as they did, perhaps, but it isn't uncommon. Here in Toronto, the minimum is a 6 month delay for new condo construction, with 1-2 years being typical.

Steel,

no scandal and no scandal implied.

Just that it's better to under promise and over deliver. Wouldn't want to be stuck, like many of these people who were promised a date and now are having to make some other plans.

Then again it's easier to say...as most of us have stable living arrangements. a number of Buffalo artists are adjusting to a few surprises.

moving into a newly constructed space is a lot different than moving into an existing space. There are contingencies outside the control of everyone in new construction. That is why everyone should have a contingency plan, builder and tenant alike.

These poor downtrodden artists are going to have some of the best digs in town at bargain rates. I don't think we need to feel sorry for them.

great job taking one person's uninformed decision and trying to make controversy out of it. any word from other artspace residents? nothing annoys me more than ignorant people with too much time on their hands. GET A LIFE!
