Buffalo River Trip

Paddled the Buffalo River and checked out the old first ward Monday afternoon, with an intrepid urban explorer. Last year I posted this about my Buffalo River trip - 2005. This year I wanted to check on some of the places I photographed last year like the Canadiana wheel house and wanted to take a closer look at the Commercial slip, too.

First stop in the old first ward was 73 Lousiana Street - house in the middle. Compare it to last year's pic. It's now owned by the City of Buffalo, really since last October. Here's the map. Lovely.
Then we checked out the Canadiana's wheel house over at BIDCO Marine. I've heard from various folks involved in the Canadiana restoration that additional parts have been collected. They were piled right next to the wheel house. Seems like the restoration crew should have placed a tarp at least over the wheel house. This is what it looked like last year.

Here's a shot of the Canadiana's maiden voyage on May 30, 1910 and it's last voyage in 1984. Make sure to check out the comments associated with that last photo.

I'll post about the Commercial slip, additional Buffalo River shots and this cool find, some time later...off to 669 for the sunrise...meanwhile click on last year's Buffalo River trip - 2005 for additional Canadiana related information.

And yes, the exterior lights that were on last May at the abandonded precinct 7 police station were burning bright this afternoon, too...go figure.
  • update...9/6/06 If you are interested in these sorts of restoration projects, you'll probably want to know about the Canadiana's sister-ships and the restoration projects happening with them. Check out the Ste. Claire and SS Canadiana and numerous other turn of the century propeller driven steamers.

the wheelhouse was great. although, why does it seem the lean-to was better taken care of? --- jen
