More Numbers - "Not Pretty"

I received the updated 2007 census numbers from LISC Buffalo the other day. In this spreadsheet you'll find the numbers for all the cities and towns in Erie County. The 2000 census is used as a baseline for comparing what in all but three cases is a continuing downward spiral.

Remember, Erie County is the second oldest county in the country - by demographic - and in a county with the worst bond rating in the country, are there really any surprises here? Like to know.

About something you wrote in an earlier post:

The statistics in Monroe County look almost exactly the same. Buffalo loses more people because Buffalo has more people to lose. But percentage-wise, they're close to identical. Buffalo still has about 70,000 more residents than Rochester. It would take something catastrophic (in terms of growth for Rochester or decline for Buffalo) for Buffalo's population to fall behind Rochester's in the lifetime of anyone who is alive today. Both cities must deal with population decline and Rochester hasn't figured out how to solve the problem yet either. Don't fall into the morbid pessimism of "the grass is always greener somewhere else."

Buffalo loses more people because the city is run by a mayor that's a moron. Anyone with common sense hangs out a for sale sign and hopes for the best and gets as far away as possible. Mayor Dickhead and his band of bumbling idiots are running the city into the ground.crime galore, bulldozing down history, building cheap houses, offering people nothing.City looks very grim for future how sad for the young growing up in Buffalo to see what is their future. It can change but the city people have to be disgusted enough to vote out the dickheads they elected and get someone in that can make positive changes. Be more careful who u vote for next time.

Very true! There are other cities in decline that have elected people with a vision and a plan to change things. Those cities are turning around for the better. I am amazed more Buffalo citizens are not outraged over how the city is run.In any employment jobs when you don't perform you are shown the door. In Buffalo one scmuck after another comes in collects a fat salary and does nothing to earn it. Makes no sense to me either but if you accept the poor job Mayor Doolittle does than you deserve what you get.

It really comes down to managing the decline...to this point Buffalo and WNY has done little to address it properly...

Mayor Brown is a good politician. And that is the problem. He is very concerned with his image due to his higher political aspirations. Lieutenant Governor, Governor, Congress? He's very focused on cosmetic quick fixes so things look good on the surface. This will look good in a state wide campaign but unfortunately, does little to solve Buffalo's problems.

Thanks,
Keith
