Test Your Knowledge of the City...

Knowing your way around the City increases your understanding and appreciation for what Buffalo used to be and what it may become...(fingers crossed) someday. One of my favorite Buffalo trivia questions is, "What city street crosses Main Street and doesn't change names?" There's only one. You know East Ferry becomes West Ferry etc...so those streets don't count. Do you know?

And while at least one Clarence resident is still figuring out compass directions as they relate to the direction of Buffalo's Main Street, I'd like to challenge readers of this blog to this question...

Where are these two houses located? Leave your best answer in the comments section under the photos. (Cynthia, I know you know...so you can't guess!)
Where is this? Where is this?

I'll leave the exact location on this map in a few days. Good luck!

    Ha ha very funny.

Route 5 (aka Main Street) has an East-West designation, regardless of its actual compass heading.

    I think its Virginia...???

I think that there are two streets that don't change names when they cross Main Street in Buffalo:

    1. Virginia
    2. Bailey

  4. # Blogger fix buffalo

Bailey becomes North Bailey...But yes, Virgina...is the right answer.

So, what about the houses? Any idea about where they are located?

This is a trick question. I know you want people to say these are on the west side near richmod and Elmwood. Amny people do not realize that the east side near main street also has these fine vivtorians. I do not know what street they are on but I am guessing somplace netween Summer and Utica

A trick question? No, we live in one City.

Keep guessing...but you can't ask Cynthia Van Ness for any help!

Exchange Street may also keep it's name on both sides of Main. There's only one block of it west of Main, but I think it's still Exchange

I mean "its" name, not "it's".

I think the house on the left is on Ellicott. The cross street would be Coe or Northhampton.

Both houses are located at the corner of Northampton and Ellicott in the East Main/North Ellicott/Artpace Nieghborhood.

Humboldt Parkway crosses Main St and retains it's name.

Ryan gets it...see the map for the exact location.

As far as Exchange Street and Humboldt Pkwy go...Exhange Street as it crosses Main Street becomes Franklin Street. Humboldt Pkwy doesn't cross Main Street. Yet, perhaps you were thinking of the 198 which is really a state hgwy and not a city street.
